What you need to play GTA 6 on launch day
Most of this is free and takes ten minutes. The rest is worth deciding on now rather than on the nineteenth.
Nothing here is exotic. The point of doing it in advance is that every one of these things is worse to deal with on launch day, when storefronts are slow and everything is sold out.
The free part, do it before November 12
Clear the storage. This is the one that catches people. Rockstar has not published an install size, so you cannot plan against a number — you can only make room. Go through your installed games now and delete what you have finished. Console storage is trivially re-downloadable; a console that is 90 percent full at 11pm on the eighteenth is a bad evening.
Preload on the twelfth. Rockstar states that pre-load begins November 12, a week before launch. If your connection is anything short of fast, this is the single highest-value thing on this list. Preloading means you are playing at unlock instead of watching a progress bar — more on preload and install size.
Do not buy physical to avoid the download. The box contains a download code, not a disc — Rockstar says so directly. You download the full game either way.
Check your console updates. A pending system update that decides to install itself at the worst moment is an avoidable annoyance.
Decide on the edition. Standard is $79.99 in the US, Ultimate is $99.99. The gap is worth what the extras are worth to you and nothing more. There is no performance difference, and Rockstar lets you upgrade later — our editions guide has the full breakdown.
The part worth thinking about
Storage expansion. If you are chronically short on space, an internal NVMe expansion is the fix rather than repeatedly deleting things. Both current consoles support this. Check the speed requirements for your specific console before buying, because not every NVMe drive qualifies.
Headphones. Rockstar's sound design has always carried a lot of the atmosphere in these games — the radio stations alone. If you are playing late at night without waking the house, this matters more than any visual upgrade.
A capture card, if you are making content. Console-only launch means console capture. If you plan to post clips, sort this out before the nineteenth rather than after, because launch week is when the audience is there.
What you do not need
A PS5 Pro or a new TV. The game is built to run on the consoles people already own. Upgrade because you want to, not because launch day requires it.
A PC. There is no PC version announced. See our PC release page for what has actually been said.
An online subscription, for now. Take-Two describes the launch release as a single-player experience, and console subscriptions are not required for single-player games — so there is no reason to buy one for this. That calculation changes if an online mode arrives later. Our no-online-at-launch page has the detail.
On launch day
Preloaded, storage clear, console updated. The rest is just waiting for the unlock. If you are going for completion, keep our map open on your phone while you play — it is built for exactly that.
Common questions
Do I need a PS5 Pro for GTA 6?
No. The game is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, and a base console is a supported platform.
When can I preload GTA 6?
Pre-load begins November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19 launch.
How much storage does GTA 6 need?
Rockstar has not published an install size. Clear as much space as you reasonably can rather than planning around a number nobody has confirmed.
Does the physical copy of GTA 6 save me the download?
No. The box contains a download code rather than a disc, so you download the full game either way.
Do I need internet to play GTA 6?
You need it to download or preload the game. The launch release is a single-player experience with no online mode.
