GTA 6 preload date and file size — what is confirmed
One of these two numbers is official and one does not exist yet. Planning around the wrong one is how people end up downloading on launch morning.
Preload begins November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19 launch. Rockstar states this on the product page for both digital editions.
The install size has not been announced. Not by Rockstar, not by Take-Two, not on either console storefront. If you have seen a figure in gigabytes, someone made it up or estimated it from a previous game.
Those are the two facts. The rest of this page is what to do with them.
What preload actually does
Preloading downloads the game to your console ahead of release, in a locked state. At the moment the game unlocks on November 19, you play — there is no download to sit through.
It does not get you in early. It removes the wait at launch, which for anyone on an ordinary home connection is the difference between playing on the nineteenth and playing whenever the download finishes.
The seven days between the twelfth and the nineteenth are the point. A download that would take most of a night is comfortable when it has a week to happen in the background.
The physical copy does not help
This is the part that catches people out, and it is stated plainly by Rockstar: the physical version of the game contains a download code, not a disc. There is no disc in the box.
So a boxed copy saves you nothing. You download the same full game, and the box exists to give you a code you can redeem — Rockstar says boxed copies become available from November 12 specifically to support preload.
If you were planning to buy physical to avoid a large download on a capped or slow connection, that plan does not work. Our editions guide covers the other consequences of the no-disc decision.
Clearing space without knowing the number
You cannot plan against a figure nobody has published, so plan against the shape of the problem instead.
Start clearing now, not on the eleventh. Deleting installed games is free and reversible — console storage re-downloads. Work through what you have finished and remove it.
Clear more than you think you need. Games of this scale have historically been among the largest installs on their platforms, and a day-one patch usually needs working room on top of the install itself.
Do it before the twelfth, not before the nineteenth. Preload is the deadline that matters. A console with no room on November 12 does not preload, and you find out on the nineteenth.
If you are chronically short on space, an internal NVMe expansion is the fix rather than repeatedly deleting things. Check the speed requirements for your specific console first — not every drive qualifies.
What we will update here
The moment Rockstar publishes an install size, this page gets it, and the updated date at the top will change. Until then it says the size is unknown, because it is.
We would rather be the page that says "not announced" than the page that guessed and was wrong — the same reason our map shows a location as confirmed only once more than one player has independently reported it, and why we can tell you exactly how little is known about the map itself.

Common questions
When does GTA 6 preload start?
November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19 launch. Rockstar states this on the product page for both digital editions.
How big is the GTA 6 download?
Rockstar has not published an install size or storage requirement. Every figure in circulation is an estimate.
Does buying the disc version avoid the download?
No. The physical version contains a download code rather than a disc, so you download the full game either way.
Do I need to pre-order to preload?
You need to own the game before preload opens. Rockstar's stated preload date applies to the digital editions.
What happens if I do not preload?
You download the game at launch instead, alongside everyone else. On a slow connection that can be the difference between playing on the nineteenth and playing on the twentieth.
